Meet Our Retreat Educators
About Janine Babich
Janine can’t remember a time in her life when there hasn’t been a sewing machine in her home, even during a year long stint on a sailboat her handy little Bernina resided in one of the few cubby holes on the 26 foot boat, always at the ready for a new creation or repair.
In 1999 her sister called her to tell her about a fantastic new sewing machine, one that could stitch embroidery designs! Janine’s husband welcomed the opportunity to buy her a gift that she might actually use and quickly had one on it’s way to her, but alas, Janine resisted, ‘I am a garment sewer, I don’t have time for embroidery’ and did not open the box for 6 months. When Janine finally opened that box a new world of creativity opened for her, she began teaching sewing and embroidery classes in 2002, authored a number of sewing and embroidery articles for Sew News & Creative Machine Embroidery magazines and eventually turned her class projects into patterns. 17 years and over 60 sewing/embroidery design patterns later and Janine has contentedly found a happy balance of embroidery, digitizing and sewing (well, not quite as much of the later as she might like and yet she can’t complain!).
About Jessica Kainski
Jessica Kapitanski has been creatively sewing and crafting since the age of five. She studied entrepreneurship at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, and now operates and designs for her own business, Sallie Tomato. She teaches classes locally, online, and across the country. She is especially addicted to sewing bags and writing patterns for them, which she sells in her online shop and through fabric shops worldwide. Her innovative designs and products aim to attract the next generation of sewing enthusiasts, while appealing to current sewists. Her hope is that when others make one of her projects they will think, “Wow, I made this!” Jessica currently lives in Wisconsin with her family.
About Cheryl Lynch
Cheryl Lynch made her first quilt out of Marimekko fabric as an impoverished chemistry graduate student at M.I.T.. It took another 17 years for her to make a second one – and then she was hooked. It has been over 25 years now.
She likes to describe herself as an artist, designer, inventor and educator. In 1996 Cheryl began teaching quilt making and then started a quilt pattern company, OyVey! Quilt Designs, in 1999 at the request of her students. Since then, Cheryl has had projects published in many national quilting publications, is the author of 2 quilting books and has won awards for her quilts at major quilt shows. In addition she has done several commissions for American synagogues, as well as created specialty rulers for creating unique quilts along with companion patterns.
Cheryl’s quilts are inspired by her family and her travels, whether it is a wrought iron railing in Barcelona or mosaics in Israel or brickwork in her state of Pennsylvania. She incorporates every technique she knows or develops new techniques when designing and creating innovative and unique quilts and loves sharing her knowledge.
